Application of Facial Recognition in Cashless Payment Systems

Payment systems in some sectors, particularly minibus taxis and other paratransit services, is mainly cash based which comes with various issues and risks. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the viability of facial recognition as the basis for a cashless payment solution.

While great strides have been made in improving the accuracy of facial recognition software, there still exist challenges in poor lighting conditions as well as in the recognition of dark-skinned faces. Thus, the use of near-infrared and full spectrum imaging techniques will be evaluated to assess improvements to the overall efficiency of current facial recognition algorithms.
