For my project, I am using a visual approach to detect potholes as seen from a vehicle. The aim is to design a warning system of some kind that will alert the driver to an upcoming pothole. A video camera is to be mounted in a vehicle which will provide the footage of the road. Various computer vision algorithms and techniques are investigated and the best method will be chosen to provide a real-time result. The potholes will also be logged and sent to a network via a GSM module that will allow for a system that could easily indicate on a map where potholes are located. The information could then be used by municipalities to maintain the roads.
